Basketball was invented in 1891 by Canadian sports teacher James Naismith (1861-1939) in order for young sports practitioners in YMCA Massachussets to stay fit during the winter months. Naismith wanted to create a game focused on finesse and skill rather than strength. Two fruit baskets were used as a goal, the ball was a football, and the game was based on 13 rules. Basketball became popular quickly, not least because the YMCA had branches across the United States, but also because many universities soon took the game. In 1936 basketball became an Olympic discipline, and in 1946, the two existing American federations merged and became the NBA, which is today the most influential and competitive basketball league in the world.

Inventor: American George L. Pierce and Spalding Bros. got patent in 1929 on the first real basketball ball, and even today's balls based on Pierce's design.
